ABOUT US

Our name

Lamalhaji is not a word. It is two names run together.

Lamarana and Alhaji Bah are brothers, born and raised in Kabala. Three years ago they began helping six children, four women in need, and one elderly man who was sick. They have taken on more every year since.

Why we started

“I was born and raised in Kabala. I do this work because of the hardship and the poverty in that part of the world.
I am from there, so I know.”

— Alhaji Bah, Vice President

What we do

Where we work
Kabala is the main town of Koinadugu District, in the far north of Sierra Leone.

Kabala is one of the poorest districts in one of the world’s poorest countries. Schools exist, and teachers turn up — but families are asked to provide uniforms, books and shoes, and many cannot. Children are turned away at the gate for want of items costing a few dollars.

That is the gap we work in. One town, where we know the families by name.

How we are funded
We take nothing. No paid staff, no offices, no salaries — every dollar that reaches us is spent in Kabala.

Lamalhaji Charity Foundation is funded entirely by individual donors, and has raised about $18,000 in three years.

We have very few donors. What they have given, they have given generously, often out of little themselves. That help is the only reason we have been able to keep going.

Who we help

Children. We find them through the schools — we visit and ask administrators to point out the children who are struggling. Complete school kits, lunch money every month, and scholarships for those who can go further.

Patients at the Kabala Government Hospital. Food for people admitted with no family nearby to bring them any. Help with medical bills and with the cost of reaching a clinic, or a hospital in another district.

Women heading households, and elderly men. Food and materials for households around Kabala township carrying the weight alone, and soup money every month.

Young people looking for work. We counsel them and place them in apprenticeships with tradespeople in Kabala — tailoring, carpentry, auto mechanics.

We do not run through intermediaries. School supplies are bought from traders in the Kabala market itself, and distribution is done by volunteers from Kabala. Every distribution is photographed, and those photographs are on this site.

Mohamed Jalloh — Managing Director, Kabala

Lamarana and Alhaji are brothers, both born and raised in Kabala, and the organisation carries both their names. Mohamed runs the work on the ground — he is the one who goes to the hospital.
